Shaw Cleartouch - A New Type of PET carpeting

I've often blogged about PET carpet. Not carpet for pets, but PET (polyethylene terephthalate). Shaw Cleartouch is an advancement in P.E.T. carpeting. Traditional P.E.T carpets are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles such as soda bottles (coke bottles as we call them here in the South), ketchup bottles, etc. Shaw Cleartouch is also made from these recycled bottles but it has quite a few enhancements. If you prefer the idea of buying carpet that is more eco friendly than others, a PET carpet is for you. The Cleartouch line by Shaw is the cream of the crop when it comes to PET carpets.

Shaw Cleartouch is designed and manufactured as a continuous filament yarn. Other PET yarns and carpets are not continuous filament. The Cleartouch continuous filament yarn style gives less fuzzing and shedding than other PET yarns. Shaw Cleartouch also wears better over time to do it's enhanced yarn system.

Another feature of Cleartouch by Shaw, is it's built in stain resistance. With a new stain resistance system, it performs much better against soiling and stains than other standard P.E.T carpet.

Lastly, if you get the chance to feel of a sample of Shaw Cleartouch, you will see it's major advantage. The inherit softness for Cleartouch is amazing. It is extremely soft when compared to normal PET carpets and actually feels like upper end nylon products.

Beckler's Carpet in Dalton Ga carries the Shaw Cleartouch products. We would love to have the opportunity to save you money on this exciting Shaw product. Give us a call @ 1-800-232-5537. The phone call is free and might save you hundreds! We do offer free samples on Shaw Cleartouch and many other PET carpet styles, so call us!

We also have a great in stock deal on a 50 ounce PET, Freize style called Sonora. You can find out more about this PET Freize at our carpet specials section on our website.

Stay tuned for more flooring information and tips on how to save money on carpet!

Dalton Ga Carpet Deals - Heavy Frieze Special

I have often heard the question "Can you really save money on carpet in Dalton, Ga?". The answer is of course you can! It's no different than buying furniture in North Carolina or Amish communities. If you go directly to where to carpet goods are made, chances are you will save a bunch on if you know how to shop.

The best way to find carpet deals in Dalton is to know what you want before you start. There are so many options and choices that it can become overwhelming if you aren't careful. On top of that, there are many carpet dealers and outlets in Dalton, Ga which just adds to the confusion on the consumers part. (Of course, at Beckler's Carpet we tend to think we are the best choice! 1-800-232-5537)

Step 1 is to decide on the type of carpet you want. For example, you may want a heavy frieze or shag. Or you may want a berber or velvet plush. If you know up front the type and color style, you will have ammo for shopping.

Step 2 is to decide how picky you want to be on the style. If you shop locally in your area first, you can pick a name brand like Shaw, Mohawk, Beaulieu, Gulistan, Royalty, Masland or other major mills. Then pick a specific style and color number. Call a reputable dealer in Dalton and check the pricing versus your local dealers. By doing this type of shopping, you can probably save 15% or so. Remember that when carpet ships from Dalton to another state, there usually is no sales tax which will almost offset shipping charges. make sure to compare final costs to your local pricing. The local dealer will stress that you have to pay shipping to get the carpet, but they never tell you about the sales tax.

If you want to save even more, you don't shop by brand, but instead shop by style. If you call around or check on the web, you will find that Dalton, Ga carpet outlets and wholesalers offer specials that are from smaller carpet mills or may be overstocks, or discontinued product lines. They may very well have the right color in the same style you are looking for. These types of carpet deals can save you tremendous amounts, up to 50%.

For example, at Beckler's Carpet, we offer a carpet special that is called Rodeo Park. Rodeo Park is a very heavy, thick frieze carpet. It is around 50 ounces and feels like a million bucks! It has a luxurious feel and has a nice flecked look to match many neutral room decors. Beckler's sells this frieze for $10.99 per square yard. The equivalent at Home Depot, Lowe's, or your local dealer will run you around $19 per yard. There are all kinds of carpet deals and specials in Dalton like this, but you have to be flexible to take advantage of them. Any reputable carpet dealer in Dalton, will ship you out a free sample on their carpet specials. When shopping for these types of carpet deals and specials, make sure to ask if the carpet deal is first or second quality and about the warranty as well.

Shopping for carpet deals in Dalton, doesn't have to be confusing. At Beckler's Carpet, we try to make the selection and price a perfect match to what you are looking for. Please give us a call at 1-800-232-5537 and let us help save you money on your next floor covering project whether it is carpet, hardwood, laminate, vinyl or rugs!

The article lays out things to look for and consider when selecting a designer carpet.

Bright Color Carpet Tiles and Squares - Great for Classrooms and Kids Rooms

Bright colored carpet tiles are a fun way to liven up any room or area. Solid colored carpet squares in orange, yellow, blue, green, purple, etc are used in a variety of ways. Carpet tiles in bold colors are typically used in 3 ways. The first is to use them as modular carpeting for wall to wall use in bedrooms, kid's playrooms, bonus rooms, basements etc and anywhere else that you want a bold or fun statement in a room. The second use is to make a custom rug using the bright tiles. Teacher's, daycare centers, and Church nurseries love to make classroom rugs out of these for children to play, sit and read on. The third use for these amazing carpet squares is in specialty retail environments. Not only do they look great, but carpet tile holds up extremely well in a retail environment.

Beckler's Carpet in Dalton, GA has just brought in a large amount of these tiles. A wide variety of colors are available. These first quality, bright tiles are 18” by 18” and are 2.25 square feet each. At just $.69 cents per foot, that's only $1.55 per tile! You can view all of these bright colored carpet tiles on our website, or call us at 1-800-232-5537 to order.

You can use these as wall to wall carpet tiles or even make your own classroom rug. To make a rug using these just simply buy the amount of tiles for each color you want and use heavy duct tape underneath to assemble the tiles together to form a bright rug for your classroom, daycare or church nursery! By using 2, 3 or 4 colors, you can create a fun area for children to play on, read on or sit during a lesson. If you buy a few extra tiles, you can always replace a damaged one later if needed.

To figure out how many tiles you need for a rug just decide the approximate size rug you need and lay it out using graph paper. Each tile is 18" by 18". As an example, an area using 8 tiles by 10 tiles would be 144 inches by 180 inches or 12 feet by 15 feet. The 8 tile wide by 10 tile high rug would need 80 tiles. At $1.55 per tile, that's only $124 plus shipping! If you're a teacher strapped for funds, you can always ask for donations from parents to get these bright carpet tiles for you room as well. Many teachers have had success asking for just a $5 donation from student's parents towards a carpet tile rug. We are willing to sell you as many or as little carpet tiles as you need, there is no minimum order amount on these.

Using 2 contrasting colored carpet squares in a pattern also makes a neat look for a playroom, bedroom, bonus room or retail store! Bright colors can stimulate a little one's mind as well as make the room seem more fun. What better way to decorate a playroom than with these inexpensive tiles?

Beckler's Carpet ships modular carpeting all over the country. As we have been in business since 1949, we have great connections as a wholesaler with the manufacturers and are able to get these discounted tiles as they come available. However, it is rare that we get bright colors and once this truckload is gone it may be a year or two before we get more in these colors. Be sure to act quick before they are gone. Give us a call @ 1-800-232-5537 or visit our website carpet tile selection. We look forward to hearing from you!

Does Armstrong Grand Illusions really look like real hardwood flooring?

Does Armstrong's Grand Illusions Laminate look like real hardwood? YES!

Don't take my word for it, let Beckler's Carpet send you a free sample and look at it yourself. Grand Illusions by Armstrong and Bruce Park Avenue Laminates look like the real thing for several reasons. The patterns that they both use are extremely random. So the grains don't create a repeating pattern across the room. The high gloss finish (some call it a piano finish) gives the same look as a high gloss hardwood floor. These laminate styles, Grand Illusions and Park Avenue, have extremely detailed board character regards less of the "wood" species you select. If you want the ease of lock and fold installation and floating floors and desire the look of the real thing, then you should start your search with these two options. A nice side feature is the thickness of these two laminates gives a similar sound to walking on wood floors as well.

A few notes to consider:

1. These are HIGH gloss finishes. They look amazing. ALL high gloss finishes whether, laminate, real hardwood, or tile require more cleaning. A high gloss finish will show much more dirt, foot prints etc than a low gloss finish. When it's clean it will look like a million bucks, but plan on cleaning a high gloss floor more often than low gloss floor. It's the same principle with Black cars. They look great if they are spotless and are show stoppers. However, black cars look dirtier much quicker than other colors.

2. Grand Illusions and Park Avenue are high performance, high quality laminate floors. However, virtually any floor can scratch, dent or chip if something is dropped on it or you drag a refrigerator or stove over it, even hardwood floors. Just keep in mind that these floors can scratch etc just like others. If you want the look of real wood but are worried about scratches, chips, etc, you should be looking at Luxury Vinyl Planks instead. Start with Karndean, Mannington Adura, Or Nafco planks.

Beckler's Carpet in Dalton, Ga carries both Grand Illusions by Armstrong and Bruce Park Avenue. For great deals on both of these floors and many others, it's worth a phone call to us! Call us at 1-800-232-5537. You can also visit our website http://www.becklerscarpet.com/. We have been flooring America since 1949 and look forward to hearing from you.

Hardwood Floors or Vinyl Wood Plank flooring - What are the differences?

What is better hardwood flooring or vinyl planks that look like wood? With the recent upswing in the popularity of vinyl planks, it's a question that is frequently asked. Reviews of the newer luxury vinyl plank and tile floors have been very positive and it's an option may are now considering. There are some distinct advantages that both hardwood flooring and vinyl wood plank floors have over each other. Let's take a look at the 2 choices and their differences.

  1. The Look of the floor - It's hard to beat the real thing! Hardwood is a natural floor. There are no patterns and the wood planks each have their own unique character. Hardwood boards can take the color of the stain applied ever so slightly different than one another. These natural variations create a great look that just can't be simulated with vinyl. However, the luxury vinyl products being manufactured today are light years ahead of the vinyl that was used in your Grandmother's kitchen! With new technology like registered embossing, not only can you see the wood grain look in vinyl planks, you can also feel the grain. It's actually pretty amazing. You will be very surprised when you see a luxury vinyl plank floor down. I have had many instances where a customer was standing on a Karndean vinyl plank floor (Karndean is a high quality vinyl tile and plank manufacturer that we sell at Beckler's Carpet in Dalton, Ga) and actually thought it was real hardwood. In most cases, you may be fooled!

  2. Durability - I can go on and on about this. Hardwood may last almost forever, but vinyl, wood looking planks will hold up better for cleaning, stain resistance, mold resistance, scratches, scuffs, and will need no refinishing. Luxury vinyl planks win this category hands down.

  3. Cost - You will be surprised that there is not much of a price difference. You can get hardwood closeout deals under $2.00 a foot if you look hard enough. Vinyl plank wood like floors start around $1.50 per foot. The better quality planks begin in the $2 per foot range similar to hardwood pricing. Installation cost vary dramatically across the country. Vinyl planks in some areas cost slightly less to install but not enough to make a significant difference between the two.

  4. Adding value to your home - Hardwood floors (as well as other natural floors like ceramic, stone, marble, etc) will add value to your home if you ever try to sell it. Vinyl planks will not. Luxury vinyl is not nearly the drawback that traditional vinyl is but in the minds of consumers it's still not the real thing.

  5. Water issues in kitchens, bathrooms, basements etc. - There is no comparison. Vinyl planks will win this argument 100% of the time. Hardwood floors, even engineered hardwood hate moisture, water leaks spills etc. Luxury vinyl wood planks are not affected by water. The absolute worst case with vinyl plank flooring is the planks adhesive is compromised and the planks have to be installed. With hardwood flooring, if you have a dishwasher leak the entire floor or most of it will have to be replaced.

  6. Large pets - Again, vinyl planks are the winner. Luxury vinyl holds up much better than hardwood with scratches, dents, pet accidents (do not stain or absorb the odor), or ever have to be refinished.

  7. Sound - OK, this is a weird one but some consumers like the sound of walking on hardwood. Luxury vinyl cannot simulate the same sound as walking on a 3/4" solid oak floor.

  8. Warmth to the feet - This is another odd difference some customers mention. A hardwood floor can seem "cold" to bare feet or feet with socks (some say this about ceramic as well). Vinyl will hold warmth better on the surface and will have a much warmer feel, especially on those cold mornings when you get out of bed!

As you can see, it is not clear cut which is the better floor. When comparing hardwood floors to vinyl wood plank flooring, you have to consider what the most important features are that you are looking for and need.

Whether you decide on hardwood or vinyl planks, please give us a call at BecklersCarpet.com, 1-800-232-5537. We carry all major brands of wood flooring including Bruce, Anderson, BR-111, Shaw, Mohawk, Robbins and many others. What and Where to Buy Carpet Flooring for an RV Camper

I have run across many a camper and RV'er who isn't really sure on where to start for the two most popular needs that a camper runs across.

The first type of flooring that I get asked about is where to get an outdoor piece of carpet for putting outside a travel trailer, 5th wheel camper or a pop up camper. It's pretty simple, just locate a flooring store that stocks outdoor carpet or grass. Usually, outdoor carpet and grass carpet is pretty inexpensive. Both come available in 6ft and 12ft widths. Normally for putting something right outside a camper, 6 foot wide goods will work just fine. You can even use boat carpet which is sometimes available in 8 foot widths. Outdoor carpet, artificial grass or turf and boat carpet are all suited well for getting wet and also extremely flexible and pliable for folding up and taking with you when you're done camping. You should be able to buy any of these types of flooring and carpet for around $4.99 a yard, maybe even less if you find someone that sells carpet seconds and offgoods in these products. Beckler's Carpet in Dalton Ga, usually has good deals on grass carpet and outdoor carpet as well, 1-800-232-5537. A hint is that 6 foot wide products are much easier and cheaper to ship around the country.

If you are looking to put new carpet in your rv or camper, you might want to consider using commercial carpet tiles. They can be cheap (Beckler's sells them as little as $.89 per square foot) and easy to install. With some double sided tape or adhesive dots, you can put them in an RV camper in little time and with minimal effort. The plus side is that they don't mind a little water on them if you're tracking in from outside and they can be removed later for pressure washing if they get too dirty. Commercial carpet tiles also have a low pile height so they shouldn't interfere with being to thick to install. These tiles also handle heavy traffic extremely well.

I hope this gives you an idea on what to consider! I plan on getting a travel trailer or pop up soon myself so I hope to see you on the road somewhere!

Be sure to call us at BecklersCarpet.com, 1-800-232-5537 and let us have a shot at your next flooring project.

What kind of Carpet flooring to use for a Roller Skating rink?

I'm sure this isn't a daily question, but what are the best options for carpeting around a roller skating rink?

Well for starters, you need a short pile carpet so the skates will roll just fine on the floor. Any type of plush, shag etc, will not work. The shorter the carpet height and denser the carpet the better. What you really need is one of two options.

Option 1 is commercial carpet tile. Commercial carpet tiles are a form of modular carpeting that come in tiles or squares with the backing pre attached. These are usually 18 inches by 18 inches all the way up to 36 inches by 36 inches. These have a short, thick construction which works great for around the outside of the skating rink. Also, as they are modular, you can replace them easily if one or a few become torn or stained. The nice thing is you can find these at a heavy discount at Beckler's Carpet in Dalton, GA for as low as 89 cents per square foot (or sometimes even cheaper!).

Option 2 is to go with a short pile commercial carpet that is roll goods. These can come in 15 and 12 foot wide selections. You can also check out Joy Carpet, a manufacturer of unique glow in the dark carpeting for places like roller rinks, arcades, game rooms, card rooms, home theaters, etc. Beckler's in Dalton also sells many different types of inexpensive commercial carpet as well as all of the products made by Joy Carpet.

Give us a call at www. BecklersCarpet.com, 1-800-232-5537 for any unique carpeting projects you may have!

Trying to Find a Carpet Seconds Wholesaler?

If you're looking to find a Carpet Wholesaler who stocks seconds, promotionals, off goods, clearances, overruns etc, than it can sometimes seem like your looking for a needle in a haystack. Most of these deals originate in Dalton, GA and then filter throughout the retail stores across the country. You will more than likely have to purchase your carpets from one of the flooring wholesalers to get the best deal. By the time it gets to your local dealer, the cheap prices have been eaten up by multiple mark ups.

If you're within a few hours of Dalton for example, Atlanta, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Huntsville, Knoxville, Nashville, etc a short drive can save hundreds or thousands of dollars. However, what if you're not?

The most simple way is to call a large wholesaler in Dalton and tell them what you are looking for (hopefully you will call us at Beckler's Carpet, 1-800-232-5537!). Beckler's receives approximately 2 to 3 tractor trailers a week in carpet seconds, overruns, overstock etc. Tell us what kind of carpet (shag, plush, Berber, frieze, printed commercial), the color (as an example, light brown, dark green, burgundy, mauve, chocolate etc), and any other specifics about what you want and we can send out a free sample direct to you that day of our current selections that fit your needs.

Beckler's inspects every single roll of carpeting that is bought as a second, closeout, overstock etc. We grade these as A, B, C, or D. A's and B's are an excellent option to consider. Although, seconds in carpets don't come with a warranty, the actual construction of the carpet is perfectly fine. the carpet me be slightly off color or have slight line discolorations that you will never see once installed.

As a Wholesale dealer who stocks these promotionals, closeouts, and seconds, Beckler's can offer up to a 60 or 70% savings over a first quality floor that you might find in a local independent flooring outlet or the large home improvement stores.
These carpet deals don't last long and they sell quickly! Call us at 1-800-232-5537 or visit http://www.becklerscarpet.com/ for more great flooring deals. Tell us you saw it on the blog!
If you would like more information about carpet off goods, you can read more in our of our articles about Carpet Seconds.

Milliken is an industry leader in commercial carpet tiles and modular squares. Commercial carpet tiles and squares are used in everything from offices, restaurants, commercial buildings, day care centers, schools and even homes (great for basements, playrooms, bonus rooms, etc.).

Hardwood and Laminate Floor Clearances

If you're looking to do a room or two and need to find a deal on hardwood or laminate floors, finding a clearance sale is a great way to save a lot of money. If you aren't super picky, you can get your floor cheap, maybe even save up to 70%. Clearances or closeouts on laminate and wood flooring are typically when a dealer has small lots left over from a large buy they have made. Wood and laminate deals may also be when a style or color has been discontinued. These small lots aren't enough to do an entire home but usually you can find enough to do a room or several rooms. It makes sense to the dealer to offer substantially lower pricing on these small amounts to clear the inventory.

Low prices on Laminate can be found discounted around $0.59 cents per foot. Even prefinished solid and engineered hardwood can be bought for as little as $0.69 cents per foot. That can mean a huge savings to help with a tight budget!

Beckler's Carpet in Dalton, GA has a large selection of closeouts on both laminate and hardwood floors. For example, Kempas solid hardwood flooring as low as $.99 per foot. Solid Kempas normally sells for around $5.00 a foot! Engineered Brazilian Cherry for as little as $.59 cents per square foot. Even Wilsonart flooring as cheap as $1.49 (that's a super deal for Wilsonart).

Please check here to view our Hardwood and Laminate Clearance Center. You can also call us Monday through Friday until 6pm and Saturdays until 4pm to ask about these and other deals, 1-800-232-5537! If you live in Atlanta, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Huntsville, Knoxville or Nashville, you within a short drive to see these yourself. We would love to have you visit! Be sure to mention you saw it on the blog.

Mullican Hardwood Floor Special on Solid Plank

Beckler's Carpet in Dalton, Ga has purchased 10 trailer loads of Mullican Hardwood Floors. Very often a consumer has to choose between a cabin grade (low end, high waste, grade with high amounts of defects) and select grade (premium board quality, little to no waste on installation) with price being the deciding factor. With the pricing that Beckler's has on the Quail Hollow series from Mullican, you can buy Select grade, Oak, solid / nail down, prefinished hardwood flooring for the same price as you would pay for cabin grade! Earthwerks Vintage Wood Look Plank - Awesome look with Great Performance

Earthwerks Vinyl Flooring has a unique series of luxury vinyl plank called Vintage. Vintage has two colors, Light Grey and a "Washed Gunstock" Brown. Both simulate a Barnwood, rustic look.

These are pretty specific looks that recreate a very worn look without the hassle of using real wood. In the right room, or even storefront setting, this look can give a cabin feel or an outdoors aura.

The nice thing is that this vinyl product uses what is called registered embossing. This means that not only do you see knots and grains in the simulated wood, but you can also feel them. It's very impressive that Earthwerks can design a product that looks so real and performs so amazing.

The benefits to luxury vinyl by Earthwerks and other manufacturers is that this new style of vinyl out performs virtually every other floor choice on the market.

It's hard to scratch. Great for pets.

Water spills and even leaks do not harm the product. Hint, Kitchens, Basements, and Bathrooms!

Nearly impossible to chip, break or crack.

Easy cleaning. Sweep and damp mop occasionally.

Warm on the feet, unlike wood and ceramic tile.

Hypo-Allergenic.

Mold Resistant.

As stain resistant as Laminate. Way more resistant than wood.

I've been racking my brain on where this series would look great. Some ideas might be in a home with a weathered look. The gray would look great in a sunroom in a beachfront home with the right layout as well. Cabins are an obvious choice. Also, a gentleman's study or office would be a nice setting for this. Any sporting goods store would look great with this product as well.

For more styles and looks, you can visit the main site of Earthwerks at http://www.earthwerks.net/.

If you would like to see a sample or get pricing be sure to call us at BecklersCarpet.com in Dalton, GA, 1-800-232-5537!

We ship all over the country and there is no sales tax when shipped outside GA. We give some of the best pricing you will find anywhere in the country and will save you money! We look forward to hearing from you.

Lyptus Wood Flooring - A New Eco Friendly Hardwood

Lyptus wood flooring, made from Eucalyptus trees is poised to be a big trend in hardwood floors. Recently introduced, it solves the dilemma of wanting an exotic hardwood floor but without the worries of harming the environment.

Why is Lytpus hardwood considered an Eco product? First of all, Lyptus flooring comes from trees in Brazil that are grown and harvested on FSC (Forresty Stewardship Council) managed farms. With that certification, you can rest assured that responsible harvesting and replanting are taking place. However, the biggest advantage is Eucalyptus trees reach maturity for harvest around 14- 16 years, as compared to Oak around 100 years. You might be thinking that this is still longer than Bamboo harvesting which is around 5 years. You're right, however this is real hardwood, not grass that has been glued together to simulate a hard surface!

If you are interested, what are the options? It is pretty limitless! You can get Lyptus in both solid and engineered (both can be refinished), factory - prefinished or unfinished, stained or natural, and in widths ranging from 2 inches to 4 inches.

The look of Lyptus has been compared to Mahogany. I also personally think it is a dead ringer for unstained Brazilian Cherry or Kempas. We just featured the Lyptus wood this weekend at the Chattanooga Home Show and the look received BIG reviews from flooring shoppers.

Pricing ranges from the high $2 to $6 per foot window depending on the option you choose.

For more factory information on Lyptus wood you can visit http://www.lyptus.com/. You can see the various colors and stains available as well as learn more about Lyptus.

When you see something you like, give BecklersCarpet.com a call, 1-800-232-5537 and let us get pricing and a FREE sample for you!

Of course we carry all other types of Hardwood flooring and other Eco options as well. We hope to hear from you soon!

Modular Carpet Squares

What's the best way to save money on Modular Carpet Squares? You can shop til' you drop to try and find the best price on carpet squares and tiles, but there is a trick to finding great, hidden deals on this exciting popular flooring trend.

1. If you find a specific style you want locally or on a website such as Shaw, Milliken, or Interface Flor, and then try to compare that across various dealers, you are still working off of a high bar. First quality, running line modular carpet squares and tiles are expensive, very expensive. Some of these can run as much as $6 a foot! Large flooring dealers work on tight markups, the best price you may find over another on first quality goods may only save you an additional 15%.

2. Try a dealer (obviously, BecklersCarpet.com !) that stocks in quantity, seconds, overruns and promotionals in modular carpet tiles and squares. By going with off goods and clearance tiles, you will save from 30% to 60%. If you aren't super picky, chances are you will be able to find a color and pattern that will work in these types of closeouts on the modular squares.

3. For a phenomenal price, if the goal is to have a floor that is functional and cool looking, consider going with an assorted lot or batch of tiles. This is a truly modular approach. Many flooring dealers who wholesale carpet squares will have very small lots of 5 or less tiles. These are hard to sell as they aren't enough to do a room or even mix with another color to complete a job. You can get these very small lots and singles for prices you wouldn't even believe. What you can do is go with a rainbow assortment, use light and dark squares to contrast (this is a neat look!) or go with a primary color scheme, such as blue, earth tones etc. By using a primary color, even though all the tiles are different shades, or patterns, they will blend as you put them down. At BecklersCarpet.com, in Dalton, GA, we have these assorted squares as well.

Whether your project is a small basement or a large office complex, you can use these techniques to save a bundle on your next flooring project! We hope you give us a call for Modular carpet squares and tiles. We know we can save you money, just give us a shot! 1-800-232-5537. Tell your sales person you saw it on the blog!

What's the best flooring for a basement?

What's the best flooring for a basement? When your putting a floor in a finished basement moisture and the subfloor material are two of the more critical issues you have to deal with. When addressing the issues of a basement the more obvious choices seem to stand out. The choices I'm going to throw at you aren't to be taken as absolute gospel but they are a very good starting point as considerations.

Ceramic Tile is a very good option. Ceramic holds up well with moisture and humidity. You can also install it over concrete whether using true ceramic with a backerboard or even the kwik tile, glueless, ceramic floating floor.

My favorite however, is carpet tile. The cheaper the better. I would stay with the commercial style instead of a fluffy, plush design. Commercial carpet tiles have a very durable backing and actually hold up better than you would realize with water and humidity. You can pressure wash them for goodness sake! If you can do that to them, a damp basement won't hurt the tile. The other reason I like commerical carpet tiles is of course the price and the fact that it is very easy to do yourself. As the cheapest and easiest flooring available on the market, it's kind of a no brainer.

The last option is a luxury vinyl flooring product. The total installed cost may run a little less than ceramic. It will hold up pretty well as well with the moisture problems. I would not use a peel and stick product though. Those tiles or planks will be coming up soon as the adhesive on them isn't very rugged for the long haul.

One other option is to paint the concrete or stain the concrete. I know very little about these options but you're kind stuck with the concrete being there one way or the other anyway. Probably the cheapest option is to get some paint and a clear coat and go to it. It won't be very soft on the feet but it would get the job done I guess.

I do not consider laminate a viable option. Moisture kills laminate floors. There are some very good moisture barrier/pad combinations available but it just isn't on my favorite list for basements due to the potential for issues later on. With that being said, I actually have laminate in my own finished basement, but it was that way when I purchased the house. I haven't had any problems yet (knock on wood) but the basement is dry as a bone. If ever re-do the room I will use another option.

I hope this helped a little bit! If you are looking to do your basement and aren't sure what to use or where to start PLEASE give us a call. We are here to help you. We get a lot of satisfaction from helping consumers pick the right floor for any room or application. We feel that if we help you get a great looking floor and it's the right floor, you'll come back the next time you need flooring. That's how we've done it since 1949 and it seems to work! What's the Best Flooring For a Kitchen?

This is another question we get asked a lot over the phone, in the store and especially at home shows! So what is the best flooring for a kitchen?

These are just my opinions! I'm sure there are varying thoughts out there but I try to take a very practical approach on this one.

When looking at kitchen floor applications I think there are three main considerations. Water on the floor, ease of cleaning and dents - scratches.

I think the two best overall options are luxury vinyl plank and tile or ceramic tile. I'll explain why.

Luxury vinyl plank and tile are very heavy commercial rated, individual planks or tiles of vinyl. These are not your typical sheet good vinyl products nor the peel and stick junk you see at the home improvement stores. This is the same stuff you are standing on in the clothing section at the nation's largest retailer (when you're at W*&mart and in the clothing section, look down at what you're standing on, it will look like wood). If it can handle their traffic it will certainly handle the traffic in your kitchen! The tiles as well mimic ceramic, slate or stone and look as awesome as the wood plank look. These planks and tiles go down individually so it doesn't have the appearance of the cheap stuff. Luxury planks and tiles hold up great with water spills, far better than hardwood or laminate. If you have ever had laminate in your kitchen and had a water leak under the dishwasher you certainly know what I'm talking about! LVTP (luxury vinyl tile and plank) also performs very well against scratches and dents. The kitchen is a place where things tend to get dropped or scraped and can be a problem area if you're not careful. LVTP is super easy to clean as well! With a cleaners on the market by manufacturers such as Bona Kemi and others, a simple damp mop does the trick. My favorite LVTP products are by Karndean (knight Tile-Warm Oak, pictured upper left), Nafco and for the budget minded, Earthwerks Pacific plank is hard to beat.

Ceramic tile holds up better than virtually anything else with water issues. Ceramic tile is apt to crack or break if you drop something very heavy on it, but at least tiles can be replaced. Regular foot traffic does nothing to ceramic. It is susceptible to scratches from dragging the fridge etc, but hopefully you won't do that! Ceramic can also add value to your home, whether real or buyer perceived and that can mean something later. Ceramic is pretty easy on day to day maintenance. Just make sure a good sealant is put on the grout when you have it installed.

So why didn't I mention hardwood or laminate? Let me say that I love hardwood! Hardwood and laminate have their place in the home. The potential of water issues can be a problem. One big leak from your icemaker or sink and your beautiful Brazilian Cherry Wood Flooring or laminate floor is toast. Wood can be very susceptible to denting. It's not as bad as it used to be with the newer aluminum oxide finishes but it can dent. Laminate in most cases is hard to scratch if little weight is applied, but water is a killer for laminate.

My thoughts on this are just that, thoughts. If you are dead set on hardwood flooring in the kitchen, than go for it! It's your kitchen and you need to be happy with it (just make sure you give us a shot at your business!!). If you can only afford an inexpensive laminate floor, then by all means, put it in. I just wanted to give you a little up front information to think about so your decision isn't an impulse buy on how nice something looks or the color matches the cabinets perfectly. When choosing a floor for a kitchen there is a lot more at stake than what just meets the eye.

Be sure to check back soon for an update on our carpet squares designing tips!

Give us a call at BecklersCarpet.com, 1-800-232-5537! Berber Carpeting - Still a Popular Flooring Choice

With the popularity of Berber carpeting in the 1980's, you would think the style has slowed down. Actually, it hasn't dropped off very much. The big loop look is still very appealing to many consumers and we literally sell Berber everyday at BecklersCarpet.com.

If you're considering Berber Carpet, you will need to decide a few things.

  • Do you want a solid or flecked/mixed color? The flecked is great for hiding soils.

  • Can you afford to buy a Nylon/Olefin blend or all Nylon product. These two types will far outperform a traditional Olefin yarn on wear, crushing, and stain resistance,

  • Do you know a very experienced installer? A good installer is very important when it come to Berber Carpeting. Seam are critical. If a poor seam is made, then loops could become frayed later on.

BecklersCarpet.com, 1-800-232-5537, has been stocking and selling Berber Carpet from many years. If you think you might be interested in looking at it for your next home project or rental property, give us a call and we will be glad to send you out a few samples to get you started! We sell all major brands as well as some of other brands that can give you a great bang for your buck.

Of course, if you live in Atlanta, Chattanooga, Birmingham, Huntsville, Knoxville or Nashville, consider a short trip to see us at our showroom in Dalton! We are open throughout the week until 6pm Eastern and even on Saturdays til 4pm. We hope to see or hear from you soon!

I'll be posting more flooring information later this week on using carpet tiles to create your own rug kit as promoted by major tile manufacturers, like Flor.

Bamboo Flooring - Looking for a Dealer?

Bamboo Flooring has become a recent hot commodity in the flooring industry. With the recent push for Eco and Green Friendly products, Bamboo floors have started gaining ground on traditional Hardwood products.

Many view Bamboo as an environmentally friendly product because it can be harvested in 3-6 years. Once the product is harvested, it can then regenerate in the same spot with little to no fertilizer.

BecklersCarpet.com in Dalton Ga (just 30 minutes from Chattanooga, an hour from Atlanta, and 2 hrs from Huntsville, Birmingham, Knoxville and Nashville!) has a great offering on Bamboo flooring. Do better understand Bamboo, you need a little information on the product's basic terms.

  1. Carbonized versus Non Carbonized - Non-Carbonized has a very light and natural look. If you want a "sweeter" more honey toned color you might want to consider a carbonized Bamboo. One side effect to note is that the process to Carbonize Bamboo softens the surface of the wood by about 10% so it will be slightly more susceptible to denting and scratching.

  2. Horizontal, Vertical, and Strand Woven - Horizontal and Vertical are basically the same structure but have a different grain look. Horizontal boards will have a joint spot sometimes called a "knuckle." Some consumers like this look. For those that don't, you need to look at a Vertical board design with a more traditional wood grain effect. Strand Woven Bamboo is a high end product that may cost you more than a exotic hardwood species. The bamboo for this product is sometimes harvested a little later than others and is also treated in the processing differently. By this change, it is a harder more dense wood like product. It is an excellent product but will be a significant investment versus regular horizontal or vertical boards. Also, the Strand Woven Bamboo has a slightly darker color like Carbonized boards but without the sacrifice of a softer surface.

  3. Engineered versus Solid - The jury seems out on this choice. Engineered can be installed over a concrete floor, whereas solid cannot. However, some schools of thought think solid Bamboo flooring is better because it may be a more hard, dense product and can give more years of refinishing. You can't go wrong with either, however if you want a more traditional style and a better chance to add value, go with solid (in hardwood flooring solid will usually add more value than engineered because it will typically have a much longer life span due to the many refinishes the floor can have).

If you're thinking about installing a Bamboo floor give us a call at BecklersCarpet.com in Dalton, GA. We will be more than glad to discuss your needs and ship you FREE samples! Of course, if you live in Atlanta, Chattanooga, Huntsville, Birmingham, Knoxville or Nashville, we would love for you to visit us! Call us @ 1-800-232-5537 for a great deal on Bamboo!
