The grooves at the joints where the boards meet is caused by the excessive stain that puddles and darkens. This laminate truly replicates the look. It's been a busy week at Beckler's Carpet. We have had a ton of interest this week out of the Atlanta area on our discount carpet tiles! What's the Best Flooring for a Bathroom?

What's the best flooring for a bathroom? There is no one perfect answer for this, but there are 3 choices that are the obvious fit for a bathroom. When considering remodeling a bathroom or when building a home your two primary concerns for bathroom flooring should be water / moisture and ease of maintenance. The three best options are ceramic or some other form of natural tile, luxury vinyl tiles and planks, or resilient vinyl sheet flooring.

Ceramic and other natural tiles are an excellent choice. Natural tiles are water resistant and can hold up under very adverse moisture conditions. You also have a ton of options for color choices for the tile itself and also grout colors. The only drawback to ceramic and other natural tiles is cleaning grout. Be sure to use a high quality grout sealer to help down the road with keeping clean.

My favorite option is luxury vinyl tiles and planks. Luxury vinyl is considerably different than traditional resilient vinyl sheet flooring. Luxury vinyl is built to handle traffic unlike any other floor. It also incorporates a very rugged backing system that makes luxury vinyl waterproof. It is also stain proof and has built in mold inhibitors and is hypo allergenic. With luxury vinyl you can use tiles that look like ceramic, slate marble etc. Some brand have a built in grout line while other use design strips that look like grout. There are even luxury vinyl tiles that let you use real grout (I'm not a fan of this option too much though as it still creates cleaning issues later). The luxury vinyl plank option finally gives consumers a choice for those who want hardwood looking floors in the bathroom. Luxury vinyl planks realistically recreate the look and feel of real wood flooring. Karndean and Earthwerks are excellent options to look at if you want to use luxury vinyl. Resilient sheet vinyl may not be a trendy choice, but it is still a solid option for wet areas like bathrooms. Some of the newer styles do look much better than in years past and a vinyl floor is the easiest to clean without question. You do have a lot of options to choose from in this type of vinyl flooring. Armstrong, Congoleum, Mannington, Tarkett, Domco and Flexitec. Depending on which brand and pattern you select in a vinyl sheet goods floor, this will probably be the least expensive option for a durable bathroom floor.

Why no mention of hardwood or laminate flooring? Hardwood and laminate should not be considered for bathrooms. Some will tell you that engineered hardwood is designed to handle moisture better than solid hardwood floors (which it is and they are correct), however it is not designed to handle the constant moisture and humidity a bathroom will have. Hardwood floors are much more suited for other living areas in the house but not a bathroom. Laminate floors are the biggest no-no for a bathroom. Laminate floors absolutely hate moisture and humidity and will buckle quickly in most bathroom applications. Yes, I know there are a few "new" brands of laminate floors that say they are approved and warranted for use in wet areas like bathrooms and kitchens but I'm still not sold on the concept of these. This "new" style tries to use better barriers and seals at the seams of the laminate planks. That's a big risk to take when there are other proven options out there. The end thought here is that if you want the look of hardwood in a bathroom use luxury vinyl planks, it's your best bet.

Gunstock Longstrip Engineered Hardwood Flooring

A popular engineered hardwood flooring option is often referred to in the floor industry as a longstrip product. (Beckler's has a great deal right now on longstrip engineered hardwood flooring for $1.99 per foot).

A longstrip engineered wood plank is a wide board, usually around 7" or so and the boards tend to be quite long, 6' or more to give stability. Why the need for added stability. Well, a longstrip wood flooring plank can usually be glued, stapled or floated. A floating floor means that no glue or staples are used. The click lock design of the boards is used to hold the boards together.

Longstrip plank hardwood flooring is offered typically in two styles, single strip and two strip. Single strip boards are when the wide plank is just that, one strip of true veneer top hardwood. Two strip designs are when two narrow boards are used on the top layer to create a wide plank board. When you install a two strip design, it looks like you just installed 2 planks.

What's the difference between Shag and Frieze Carpet?

What's the difference between Frieze and Shag carpet? It's a lot easier to show in person than explain in a post but here goes!

Shag carpet is usually constructed with a thicker yarn and with less twist than Frieze carpet. Frieze usually has a slightly shorter height on the yarn that Shag. Due to the lower twist in the yarn in Shag carpet, Shag may sometimes fell softer as well. Although this may seem like a plus, the high amount of twist in Frieze carpet gives it a longer lasting "memory" and helps against heavy traffic and wear.

Frieze is also considered more conservative than Shag. Shag can make a bold statement for a room's decor whereas Frieze is more likely to accent a room's layout.

Shag's and Frieze both offer options besides solid colors. The difference is that Shag has options that are multicolor. In multicolor Shag, the yarn used are still solid colors but two different color yarns are incorporated. With a multicolor Frieze, the yarn is flecked, or spotted and has a salt and pepper look when using multiple colors.

Where is the Best Place to Buy Carpet?

Shopping for flooring and want to know where is the best place to buy carpet? Obviously I'm biased (hint, BecklersCarpet.com!) but let me layout the options you have and maybe you will see why it's better to buy from a carpet outlet in Dalton, Ga (hint 2, Beckler'sCarpet.com!)

Option 1 - Buy carpet from one of the two large home improvement chains. Sure the convenience is there but that is where it ends. If you do some homework and are able to decipher and compare the private label styles, you will find that the pricing is high when compared to other name brand or other private labels at carpet outlets in Dalton. "But what about the great deals they have on installation for only $79 for a whole house?" Read the fine print. Want them to actually haul off the carpet (novel concept huh?)? It's an upcharge. Have stairs? It's an upcharge. Multiple seams? Bingo, upcharge. Just be sure to truly compare. If you are only shopping for convenience, these stores are for you if you don't mind paying quite a bit more than other options.

Option 2 - Is a local independent flooring store the best place to buy carpet? Maybe, maybe not. There are good ones out there. Flooring and More Blog Thoughts on 2010

Well a New Year has hit! I hope you had a great and safe holiday. 2010 is here and I'm going to put my predictions out there for flooring (do not hold me to this as there are many others out there much more informed than me, but hey it's fun!).

Luxury Carpet will continue to make a a come back. The housing market seems to be coming back and with it demand for higher quality, more plush, rich carpeting will be as well. The lower end, value carpeting products still have their place, but I think house flipping and rental investments will take a while to come back so those buying carpet will be buying for themselves. Along with luxury and designer carpet, I think Smartstrand from Mohawk will also continue to make big splashes.

This next one will upset some people. I think the Eco market in general will die down. Some products like Smartstrand and P.E.T. carpeting will do well, but I think the Bamboo trend is going to start tapering similar to laminate. I have no data to back this up, but Bamboo is a trendy floor subject to lose out to the next fad. Bamboo is a good floor, don't get me wrong, but with other options out there it may start to loose a small bit of luster. Consumers (including myself are fickle and are always looking for the next big thing).

The next big thing is going to continue to be vinyl plank flooring. Not the cheap stuff you get at the big home improvement stores but the luxury vinyl offerings out there. As I saw first hand this year, the public is becoming more aware of the superb qualities of luxury vinyl planks. Luxury vinyl wood looking planks (and vinyl ceramic looking tiles) will continue to be the next big thing. All data I saw last year was this segment grew by over 30%. I expect it to grow even more this year. Look out for the new Do it yourself luxury vinyl floor coming from Armstrong called Luxe.

Shaw Cleartouch - A New Type of PET carpeting

I've often blogged about PET carpet. Not carpet for pets, but PET (polyethylene terephthalate). Shaw Cleartouch is an advancement in P.E.T. carpeting. Traditional P.E.T carpets are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles such as soda bottles (coke bottles as we call them here in the South), ketchup bottles, etc. Shaw Cleartouch is also made from these recycled bottles but it has quite a few enhancements. If you prefer the idea of buying carpet that is more eco friendly than others, a PET carpet is for you. The Cleartouch line by Shaw is the cream of the crop when it comes to PET carpets.

Shaw Cleartouch is designed and manufactured as a continuous filament yarn. Other PET yarns and carpets are not continuous filament. Does Armstrong Grand Illusions really look like real hardwood flooring?

Does Armstrong's Grand Illusions Laminate look like real hardwood? YES!

Don't take my word for it, let Beckler's Carpet send you a free sample and look at it yourself. Grand Illusions by Armstrong and Bruce Park Avenue Laminates look like the real thing for several reasons. The patterns that they both use are extremely random. So the grains don't create a repeating pattern across the room. The high gloss finish (some call it a piano finish) gives the same look as a high gloss hardwood floor. These laminate styles, Grand Illusions and Park Avenue, have extremely detailed board character regards less of the "wood" species you select. If you want the ease of lock and fold installation and floating floors and desire the look of the real thing, then you should start your search with these two options. A nice side feature is the thickness of these two laminates gives a similar sound to walking on wood floors as well.

A few notes to consider:

1. These are HIGH gloss finishes. They look amazing. ALL high gloss finishes whether, laminate, real hardwood, or tile require more cleaning. A high gloss finish will show much more dirt, foot prints etc than a low gloss finish. When it's clean it will look like a million bucks, but plan on cleaning a high gloss floor more often than low gloss floor. It's the same principle with Black cars. They look great if they are spotless and are show stoppers. However, black cars look dirtier much quicker than other colors.

2. Grand Illusions and Park Avenue are high performance, high quality laminate floors. However, virtually any floor can scratch, dent or chip if something is dropped on it or you drag a refrigerator or stove over it, even hardwood floors. Just keep in mind that these floors can scratch etc just like others. If you want the look of real wood but are worried about scratches, chips, etc, you should be looking at Luxury Vinyl Planks instead. Start with Karndean, Mannington Adura, Or Nafco planks.

What is better hardwood flooring or vinyl planks that look like wood? With the recent upswing in the popularity of vinyl planks, it's a question that is frequently asked. Reviews of the newer luxury vinyl plank and tile floors have been very positive and it's an option may are now considering. There are some distinct advantages that both hardwood flooring and vinyl wood plank floors have over each other. Let's take a look at the 2 choices and their differences.

The Look of the floor - It's hard to beat the real thing! Hardwood is a natural floor. There are no patterns and the wood planks each have their own unique character. Hardwood boards can take the color of the stain applied ever so slightly different than one another. These natural variations create a great look that just can't be simulated with vinyl. However, the luxury vinyl products being manufactured today are light years ahead of the vinyl that was used in your Grandmother's kitchen! With new technology like registered embossing, not only can you see the wood grain look in vinyl planks, you can also feel the grain. It's actually pretty amazing. You will be very surprised when you see a luxury vinyl plank floor down. In most cases, you may be fooled!

Durability - I can go on and on about this. Hardwood may last almost forever, but vinyl, wood looking planks will hold up better for cleaning, stain resistance, mold resistance, scratches, scuffs, and will need no refinishing. Luxury vinyl planks win this category hands down.

Cost - You will be surprised that there is not much of a price difference. You can get hardwood closeout deals under $2.00 a foot if you look hard enough. Vinyl plank wood like floors start around $1.50 per foot. The better quality planks begin in the $2 per foot range similar to hardwood pricing. Installation cost vary dramatically across the country. Vinyl planks in some areas cost slightly less to install but not enough to make a significant difference between the two.

Adding value to your home - Hardwood floors (as well as other natural floors like ceramic, stone, marble, etc) will add value to your home if you ever try to sell it. Vinyl planks will not. Luxury vinyl is not nearly the drawback that traditional vinyl is but in the minds of consumers it's still not the real thing.

Water issues in kitchens, bathrooms, basements etc. - There is no comparison. Vinyl planks will win this argument 100% of the time. Hardwood floors, even engineered hardwood hate moisture, water leaks spills etc. Luxury vinyl wood planks are not affected by water. The absolute worst case with vinyl plank flooring is the planks adhesive is compromised and the planks have to be installed. With hardwood flooring, if you have a dishwasher leak the entire floor or most of it will have to be replaced.

Large pets - Again, vinyl planks are the winner. Luxury vinyl holds up much better than hardwood with scratches, dents, pet accidents (do not stain or absorb the odor), or ever have to be refinished.

Sound - OK, this is a weird one but some consumers like the sound of walking on hardwood. Luxury vinyl cannot simulate the same sound as walking on a 3/4" solid oak floor.

Warmth to the feet - This is another odd difference some customers mention. A hardwood floor can seem "cold" to bare feet or feet with socks (some say this about ceramic as well). Vinyl will hold warmth better on the surface and will have a much warmer feel, especially on those cold mornings when you get out of bed!

I have run across many a camper and RV'er who isn't really sure on where to start for the two most popular needs that a camper runs across.

The first type of flooring that I get asked about is where to get an outdoor piece of carpet for putting outside a travel trailer, 5th wheel camper or a pop up camper. It's pretty simple, just locate a flooring store that stocks outdoor carpet or grass. Usually, outdoor carpet and grass carpet is pretty inexpensive. Both come available in 6ft and 12ft widths. Normally for putting something right outside a camper, 6 foot wide goods will work just fine. You can even use boat carpet which is sometimes available in 8 foot widths. Outdoor carpet, artificial grass or turf and boat carpet are all suited well for getting wet and also extremely flexible and pliable for folding up and taking with you when you're done camping. You should be able to buy any of these types of flooring and carpet for around $4.99 a yard, maybe even less if you find someone that sells carpet seconds and offgoods in these products. I'm sure this isn't a daily question, but what are the best options for carpeting around a roller skating rink?

Well for starters, you need a short pile carpet so the skates will roll just fine on the floor. Any type of plush, shag etc, will not work. The shorter the carpet height and denser the carpet the better. What you really need is one of two options.

Option 1 is commercial carpet tile. Commercial carpet tiles are a form of modular carpeting that come in tiles or squares with the backing pre attached. These are usually 18 inches by 18 inches all the way up to 36 inches by 36 inches. These have a short, thick construction which works great for around the outside of the skating rink. Also, as they are modular, you can replace them easily if one or a few become torn or stained. Why is Lytpus hardwood considered an Eco product? First of all, Lyptus flooring comes from trees in Brazil that are grown and harvested on FSC (Forresty Stewardship Council) managed farms. With that certification, you can rest assured that responsible harvesting and replanting are taking place. However, the biggest advantage is Eucalyptus trees reach maturity for harvest around 14- 16 years, as compared to Oak around 100 years. What's the best way to save money on Modular Carpet Squares? You can shop til' you drop to try and find the best price on carpet squares and tiles, but there is a trick to finding great, hidden deals on this exciting popular flooring trend.

1. If you find a specific style you want locally or on a website such as Shaw, Milliken, or Interface Flor, and then try to compare that across various dealers, you are still working off of a high bar. First quality, running line modular carpet squares and tiles are expensive, very expensive. Some of these can run as much as $6 a foot! Large flooring dealers work on tight markups, the best price you may find over another on first quality goods may only save you an additional 15%.

2. Try a dealer (obviously, BecklersCarpet.com !) that stocks in quantity, seconds, overruns and promotionals in modular carpet tiles and squares. By going with off goods and clearance tiles, you will save from 30% to 60%. If you aren't super picky, chances are you will be able to find a color and pattern that will work in these types of closeouts on the modular squares.

3. For a phenomenal price, if the goal is to have a floor that is functional and cool looking, consider going with an assorted lot or batch of tiles. This is a truly modular approach. Many flooring dealers who wholesale carpet squares will have very small lots of 5 or less tiles. What's the best flooring for a basement?

What's the best flooring for a basement? When your putting a floor in a finished basement moisture and the subfloor material are two of the more critical issues you have to deal with. When addressing the issues of a basement the more obvious choices seem to stand out. The choices I'm going to throw at you aren't to be taken as absolute gospel but they are a very good starting point as considerations.

Ceramic Tile is a very good option. Ceramic holds up well with moisture and humidity. You can also install it over concrete whether using true ceramic with a backerboard or even the kwik tile, glueless, ceramic floating floor.

My favorite however, is carpet tile. The cheaper the better. I would stay with the commercial style instead of a fluffy, plush design. Commercial carpet tiles have a very durable backing and actually hold up better than you would realize with water and humidity. You can pressure wash them for goodness sake! If you can do that to them, a damp basement won't hurt the tile. The other reason I like commerical carpet tiles is of course the price and the fact that it is very easy to do yourself. As the cheapest and easiest flooring available on the market, it's kind of a no brainer.

The last option is a luxury vinyl flooring product. The total installed cost may run a little less than ceramic. It will hold up pretty well as well with the moisture problems. I would not use a peel and stick product though. Those tiles or planks will be coming up soon as the adhesive on them isn't very rugged for the long haul.

One other option is to paint the concrete or stain the concrete. I know very little about these options but you're kind stuck with the concrete being there one way or the other anyway. Probably the cheapest option is to get some paint and a clear coat and go to it. It won't be very soft on the feet but it would get the job done I guess.

I do not consider laminate a viable option. Moisture kills laminate floors. There are some very good moisture barrier/pad combinations available but it just isn't on my favorite list for basements due to the potential for issues later on. With that being said, I actually have laminate in my own finished basement, but it was that way when I purchased the house. I haven't had any problems yet (knock on wood) but the basement is dry as a bone. If ever re-do the room I will use another option.

This is another question we get asked a lot over the phone, in the store and especially at home shows! So what is the best flooring for a kitchen?

These are just my opinions! I'm sure there are varying thoughts out there but I try to take a very practical approach on this one.

When looking at kitchen floor applications I think there are three main considerations. Water on the floor, ease of cleaning and dents - scratches.

I think the two best overall options are luxury vinyl plank and tile or ceramic tile. I'll explain why.

Luxury vinyl plank and tile are very heavy commercial rated, individual planks or tiles of vinyl. These are not your typical sheet good vinyl products nor the peel and stick junk you see at the home improvement stores. This is the same stuff you are standing on in the clothing section at the nation's largest retailer (when you're at W*&mart and in the clothing section, look down at what you're standing on, it will look like wood). If it can handle their traffic it will certainly handle the traffic in your kitchen! The tiles as well mimic ceramic, slate or stone and look as awesome as the wood plank look. These planks and tiles go down individually so it doesn't have the appearance of the cheap stuff. Luxury planks and tiles hold up great with water spills, far better than hardwood or laminate. If you have ever had laminate in your kitchen and had a water leak under the dishwasher you certainly know what I'm talking about! LVTP (luxury vinyl tile and plank) also performs very well against scratches and dents. The kitchen is a place where things tend to get dropped or scraped and can be a problem area if you're not careful. LVTP is super easy to clean as well! With a cleaners on the market by manufacturers such as Bona Kemi and others, a simple damp mop does the trick. My favorite LVTP products are by Karndean (knight Tile-Warm Oak, pictured upper left), Nafco and for the budget minded, Earthwerks Pacific plank is hard to beat.

Ceramic tile holds up better than virtually anything else with water issues. Ceramic tile is apt to crack or break if you drop something very heavy on it, but at least tiles can be replaced. Regular foot traffic does nothing to ceramic. It is susceptible to scratches from dragging the fridge etc, but hopefully you won't do that! Ceramic can also add value to your home, whether real or buyer perceived and that can mean something later. Ceramic is pretty easy on day to day maintenance. Just make sure a good sealant is put on the grout when you have it installed.

So why didn't I mention hardwood or laminate? Let me say that I love hardwood! Hardwood and laminate have their place in the home. The potential of water issues can be a problem. One big leak from your icemaker or sink and your beautiful Brazilian Cherry Wood Flooring or laminate floor is toast. Wood can be very susceptible to denting. It's not as bad as it used to be with the newer aluminum oxide finishes but it can dent. Laminate in most cases is hard to scratch if little weight is applied, but water is a killer for laminate.

My thoughts on this are just that, thoughts. If you are dead set on hardwood flooring in the kitchen, than go for it! It's your kitchen and you need to be happy with it (just make sure you give us a shot at your business!!). If you can only afford an inexpensive laminate floor, then by all means, put it in. I just wanted to give you a little up front information to think about so your decision isn't an impulse buy on how nice something looks or the color matches the cabinets perfectly. When choosing a floor for a kitchen there is a lot more at stake than what just meets the eye.

Bamboo Flooring - Looking for a Dealer?

Bamboo Flooring has become a recent hot commodity in the flooring industry. With the recent push for Eco and Green Friendly products, Bamboo floors have started gaining ground on traditional Hardwood products.

Many view Bamboo as an environmentally friendly product because it can be harvested in 3-6 years. Once the product is harvested, it can then regenerate in the same spot with little to no fertilizer.

Carbonized versus Non Carbonized - Non-Carbonized has a very light and natural look. If you want a "sweeter" more honey toned color you might want to consider a carbonized Bamboo. One side effect to note is that the process to Carbonize Bamboo softens the surface of the wood by about 10% so it will be slightly more susceptible to denting and scratching.

Horizontal, Vertical, and Strand Woven - Horizontal and Vertical are basically the same structure but have a different grain look. Horizontal boards will have a joint spot sometimes called a "knuckle." Some consumers like this look. For those that don't, you need to look at a Vertical board design with a more traditional wood grain effect. Strand Woven Bamboo is a high end product that may cost you more than a exotic hardwood species. The bamboo for this product is sometimes harvested a little later than others and is also treated in the processing differently. By this change, it is a harder more dense wood like product. It is an excellent product but will be a significant investment versus regular horizontal or vertical boards. Also, the Strand Woven Bamboo has a slightly darker color like Carbonized boards but without the sacrifice of a softer surface.

Engineered versus Solid - The jury seems out on this choice. Engineered can be installed over a concrete floor, whereas solid cannot. However, some schools of thought think solid Bamboo flooring is better because it may be a more hard, dense product and can give more years of refinishing. You can't go wrong with either, however if you want a more traditional style and a better chance to add value, go with solid (in hardwood flooring solid will usually add more value than engineered because it will typically have a much longer life span due to the many refinishes the floor can have).

What's the best flooring if you have pets?

We get asked a lot " What is the best flooring if you have pets." I wanted to give our general take on this question and let you know our thoughts to give you some directions to consider. Be advised though, I will not be taking into consideration subfloor structure, what part of the country you live in, above grade or below grade (basement) and other issues separate from pet issues. Be sure to talk with your sales person, hopefully at BecklersCarpet.com 1-800-232-5537, and let them know as much as you can about your application. With that being said, here are my tips for some of the best overall around ideas for flooring if you have pets.

Tile-Stone, Ceramic or porcelain. We don't do stone tile at Becklers Carpet so I can't fully and intelligently go in depth about stone, but it would hold up like a tank if you had it (probably though like other tile, very expensive install cost and probably higher material cost than ceramic and porcelain). Ceramic and porcelain tile are both great for pets as the surface is very hard and holds up well to most pet traffic. Tile also does well with pet accidents, water, liquids etc. Tile also can give a very elegant look as a side benefit.

Luxury Vinyl plank or tile. Never heard of luxury vinyl before? It's a super heavy duty vinyl product that in most cases is even designed to hold up in commerical applications. The planks or tiles are glued down individually and give a real look that will blow you away. They are extremely hard surfaced and don't scratch very easily. They also do great with water issues. Kardean, Nafco, and Earthwerks are the major players in this market. If you have ever been in the clothing department at W**mart and seen the amazing floor that looks like wood you've seen luxury vinyl. It looks super and if it will hold up in that kind of traffic, your terrier isn't going to hurt it much. You can also do some great designs with this type of floor. As a summary, it doesn't scratch easily, looks great and does well with moisture issues and pet accidents. Install cost is less than tile but more than laminate.

Laminate flooring. Laminate flooring does amazing when it comes to surface scratches. It is extremely hard to scratch. It does decent with surface liquid spills (pet urine) but need to be wiped up pretty quick. If a fair amount of liquid gets in between the seams it can cause a problem though with buckling. In review, laminate wears well for pet feet and nails but is so-so for pet urine and water bowl spills. Install cost is very low compared to other floors. Laminate can even be be a moderate do-it-yourself project.

If you will notice, I did not mention Hardwood or Carpet. Carpet can wear decently, but does horrible with pet accidents. Moisture can seep into the pad and the smell and stain is very hard to get rid of, even with newer stain products on the market. If you feel you have to have carpet, please, please consider a top end pad that has a superb moisture barrier, such as spillguard pad or stainmaster pad.

Hardwood floors are beautiful. Not so much though after several years of pet nails and traffic. If you think hardwoods floors are for you and you'll have pets in the house, consider one of the harder species on the Janka scale (scale that measures hardness and density of wood) such as Asian Walnut, Brazilian Cherry or Tigerwood. Oak probably isn't the ideal choice. I'll touch on Bamboo while I'm on hardwood. A high end, stranded Bamboo will probably hold up like the better woods. I would not consider a lower end bamboo or engineered bamboo as they are probably too soft. If the bamboo is much lower priced than the woods I mentioned above then it won't work. As a matter of fact, if they are priced about the same, you might as well go ahead with the hardwood because it will add value to the home. I'm still not a fan though of hardwood and pets together. A last tip, if you have hardwood and pets, use rugs and lots of em. They are much more replaceable than the wood. Just be sure to move the rugs around occasionally as a few species of hardwood floors can slowly change color over their life and the rug on top of it for a long period could affect the coloring below.

I do think flooring with pets is a tough decision that needs to be addressed at the onset of your project. Cheap Laminate Flooring-Tips when looking to Buy

I have published a few articles recently about the 5 tips to remember when looking to buy cheap laminate flooring and wanted to briefly cover these points in the blog this week. Some of these tips you may know, one or two you may not. Either way, it's a nice reminder for all of us. It seems that the market right now is full of consumers, but the trend is not only toward trying to save money on carpet - hardwood - laminate - etc, but also products in the lower price range. With that in mind, enjoy the following tips for saving money on laminate!

Be wary of "salvage" or closeout centers. They will probably not be able to get you more material if you need it later. There may also be an issue if you have a warranty claim. Some manufacturers will only honor claims from an authorized distributor. Often the product has changed hands 3 or 4 times by the time it gets to a salvage dealer. Sure the pricing may look attractive, but the backside is a toss up.
Where is it manufactured? USA, Europe, China? USA products seem to hold up fine. Laminate was invented in Europe so they are a manufacturing hub for this type of flooring and know how to make it well. Asian laminate in the words of Forrest Gump are "like a box of chocolates, you never know what you're gonna get". That's all I have to say about that (another Forrest reference).
Don't pay for samples unless your looking at a non-stock or non-standard laminate product. If it is a hot seller for the dealer then they have it in stock and should be willing to send you one via postal service or ups. Please don't go to the big home improvement store in your home town and buy samples and then go back and buy flooring! That's almost like test driving a car and the dealer asking for 2 bucks to pay for the gas you used on the test drive. It's an insult. Sure they may be times where it is necessary to pay for one but only if it is an oddball.
Don't pay hidden fees often called "less than pallet quantity" or small quantity surcharge. It's a bogus way of showing the price and it is misleading. Sure there are price differences sometimes between full pallet and short quantity pricing. The manufacturer's price many products to the dealer this way. Just make sure it is being represented correctly when you ask for the price. Make sure the dealer knows your quantity.
The obvious question to ask is if the cheap laminate flooring is first quality. Whether you buy first quality, second quality, drop styles or whatever else, that is up to you. The tip here is to ask and get in writing or on the quote or invoice the quality state of the laminate floor.

What are Carpet Squares and why are they a trend in floorcovering? Carpet Tiles or Squares have been around a long time. I remember my parents using them in our basement 35 years ago as a cheap way to cover the concrete floor for a play area. However, squares and tiles have come a long way in the flooring market since then.

Typically squares and tiles manufactured from carpet goods, are used most popularly in the Do-It-Yourself market segment. A very common use is a playroom. Other areas we see Carpet Tiles installed are bonus rooms and basements. Almost anyone can install these themselves with a level, clean floor and a good carpet knife!

As many tiles and squares now have an integral padding with a tacky underside, you simply start with a level layout and work your way throughout the room. Not only are they easy to put down, but if you ever get one soiled enough that needs changing, you simply pull it up and replace it with a spare (yes, hint, buy extra when you purchase to have extras later on down the road).

The more predominant squares come in 18"x18" and have a residential look and feel of a cut pile or trackless style of carpet. You will see a variety of different yarns used in manufacturing. Another type of square seen in the market is the commercial loop design, This design will usually come in 3'x3' squares and have a little heavier rubbery backing than the residential styles. You can use either one depending on the look and style you like.

If you are going with a solid tile, think about doing a checkerboard design! This design looks great when down and can give a room a little more flair than just a solid color.

Eco friendly flooring information, what are the options?

So you're wondering what are the options for Eco Flooring and how are the available products dissimilar? There are quite a few proven floorcovering options for Eco Friendly conscious consumers. Some of these you may be aware of, some of them you may not. There is a ton of data and flooring information available on Green and Eco friendly floors. The basic types are classified as hard surface and soft surface.

The most commonly discussed Green flooring options are hard surface. Bamboo has recently gained a lot of popularity because of it's high sustainability factor. Bamboo grows rapidly and can be processed into an attractive wood looking floorcovering. One thing to remember is that cheaply priced Bamboo floors tend to have fairly high significant levels of chemicals, including formaldehyde, so off-gasing can be an issue after installation and over time. If considering Bamboo, go with at least a mid-range quality product and stay away from the cheap stuff (if it's $.99/ft you probably don't want it). A good question to ask when buying Bamboo is where is it processed. If it is processed in the US, it's worth considering. The Asian processed product is one you also want to eliminate from consideration (high chemical content).

Another, quickly growing hard surface Green floor trend is Cork. Cork is harvested from the outer part of the tree, so the tree itself is not killed in the process and more Cork can be taken from the same tree years later. This makes Cork a great Eco floor as it is very sustainable. Cork is highly durable, provides a great insulation factor for temperature and noise and is even hypo allergenic in most forms. It also can give a very unique look to a room. Cork can sometimes be installed over an existing floor as well. Cork is very versatile and a super all around choice. One caution, some Cork products can fade in sunlight so be sure to consider where you are putting the floor.

Some experts consider true, solid, hardwood floors as an Eco option. The downfall is that trees are harvested for the final product. However, the Green thought is that the floor that comes as an end result is a floor that will last in most cases the life of the home, without need for replacing with other flooring. This eliminates product going to the landfill. When the hardwood floor is no longer needed, it is very landfill friendly as it is a natural product and not synthetic.

There are multiple soft surface textile choices for purchasing Green/Eco friendly floors. One is a popular carpet style called P.E.T Carpet (Polyethylene terephthalate). P.E.T yarn is constructed from 100% recycled plastic soda bottles. Typically, these bottles cannot be used for recycling into use for their original use, so a large amount annually of this waste is used back into the process for crating carpet yarn. PET carpet does has an excellent wear life and is resistant to most forms of stains as a side benefit.

A recent breakthrough in Green friendly carpet is a yarn created from a fiber from DuPont™ called Sorona®. This fiber is partially processed and manufactured from Corn Syrup which is an extremely sustainable product and also biodegradable. This product is currently available from Mohawk Smartstrand Carpet.

PET Carpet (recycled plastic bottle carpet)

With the focus on Eco and Earth last week, I wanted to touch on a carpet type that has actually been around a few years now. P.E.T. Carpet (Polyethylene terephthalate) is carpet that has yarn made from recycled plastic bottles. Most of these carpets are made from 100% recycled content, not just a blend. Recently, Eco flooring types have been promoted as Bamboo and Cork for their sustainability, but PET carpet has been overlooked somewhat of late. Almost all recycled plastic bottles cannot be recycled and reused as drinking container plastic. It has something to do with the chemical properties of the plastic and it absorbing the molecules of the last liquid in it ( a guy that works for a Coke bottling plant tried to explain it to me, but it was pretty technical). Since the bottles can't be reused for their original use, carpet makes perfect sense instead of the plastic sitting in a landfill!

In my opinion, this makes PET Carpet, one of the most Eco friendly options out there on the market. Due to it's plastic nature, it is very stain resistant as well. It feels very good to the touch also. You will never know it was made from bottles!

Luxury Vinyl Plank options

Beckler's is continuing to expand our Luxury Vinyl Plank options. We've been very successful with our Karndean line, which is the Cadillac of vinyl planks. We've also seen an upswing in Nafco and Earthwerks products. BecklersCarpet.com will soon be announcing a new Luxury Plank in the $1.29/per sq ft range! This is not a peel and stick, low end product! It will look great and hold up tremendously well compared to standard vinyl sheet flooring or other low end vinyl planks you might see at the big orange box store. With all of the advantages of luxury vinyl compared to laminate and hardwood, this new product we are going to be carrying will be a big hit.

Luxury Vinyl planks are extremely moisture resistant, much more so than laminate (no laminate in kitchens, a sink leak will kill the floor!) and solid wood. They are also very easy to clean and look amazing due to the individual plank design.

Prefinished Oak hardwood versus Unfinished Oak

Prefinished Oak hardwood flooring vs Unfinished Oak flooring. It's a difference that consumers deal with when considering installing a hardwood floor in their new or existing home.

More often than not, the appeal of having a custom floor is alluring to the consumer. If you're dead set on having the wood have a perfect match to your custom stained cabinets, and you can't find a prefinished floor that goes with them, then looking at unfinished is probably an option for you. However, that it about the only reason an unfinished floor should be considered, when color is the only factor.

A few things to note when deciding between prefinished and unfinished wood floors:

The quality of the actual finish will be far greater on a prefinished. Prefinished wood floors will usually have between 4-7 coats of Aluminum Oxide and or Polyurethane applied at the factory using several treatments that include heating and pressure. Not only will the finish be incomparably better on a prefinished wood, but the process also rids the wood of any excess moisture. There are some great custom wood flooring installers out there. Don't get me wrong! They just can't give you them same finish quality due to good ol' physics and chemistry.
Manufacturer's give between a 5 and 25 year wear warranty and 5 and 15 years on the finish itself. If you go with a custom stained unfinished floor you will get a 1 year warranty at best.
A custom prefinished floor will take a lot longer to install. The floor has the be "aired out" longer before the job, it has to be nailed down, then sanded, then stained, then finished, and then sometimes another finish is applied. It can be a week process sometimes. Prefinished oak floors are installed in less than half the time.
Installing a prefinished hardwood floor produces less off gassing and VOC's than a custom unfinished version.
Unfinished hardwood will have to be refinished much quicker than factory prefinished versions. Refinishing a floor is not an inexpensive project.

Don't get me wrong on this! It may seem like I'm knocking unfinished, custom wood flooring. If you want to have a custom floor that's great. However, you need to know the right flooring information so you can decide if it's really the right choice for you.

The basics to buy carpet

So it's time to buy carpet? There are some basic things you will need to know. I'll touch on these things to get you started in the right direction. I'm not planning on making you an expert, but if I can get you thinking about more than just "is it the right color and how does it feel?" than we've accomplished something together!

First, before I jump into specific flooring information, think about your home and current situation. How long do you plan on staying at your current home? Why are you replacing the carpet? Or if you are a property manager, how long do you want the floor to last? If you're a builder, is this a spec home or higher end job? Try to get a feel for the performance that will be expected of the carpet. If you are only going to be in the home for 6 months, it may not make sense to get a higher end carpet style. Be sure to relay this type of information to your salesperson, whether over the phone, email or in person.

Once you have an idea of your need, then it's time to get into the nitty gritty. There are several different styles of carpet:

Plush/Saxony-Very formal and elegant but tends to show tracks. Comes in solid colors
Berber-can look casual or formal depending on decor, usually made out of olefin so it can mat down somewhat over time, also with Berber, the fewer the seams the better because it's a loop product and the fewer the seams, the fewer the loops that can become pulled at the edges. Comes in solid and flecked colors, hides surface dirt well if flecked colors
Semi trackless/textured plush-imagine a plush, but the fibers are slightly twisted to give a still somewhat formal look but shows less tracks than plush. Comes in solid colors but the appearance can change slightly depending on the light
Frieze- highly twisted, irregular fibers that resemble shag, but are thinner tighter fiber strands. Comes solid or flecked, and like Berber, can hide surface dirt well
Sculptured/cut loop/high-low- has a pattern with high and low loops or a mix of some loops that are cut and some are pulled tight against the backing. There is a high variation in these styles of color mixes, yarns, looks etc
Level loop-usually a commercial looking style with short, tight loops of carpet, made for high traffic, usually don't see in homes

There are also different types of yarn used in carpet. Nylon is king. It has a nice feel and has superior wear and "memory". Nylon also resists soil and stains well. Another yarn is Polyester. Polyester may have one of the best "feels" out of all of the yarns. It is also very stain resistant. Polyester may have more "fuzzing" than other yarns though. The third yarn is Olefin. Olefin is a polypropylene blended product. It is extremely stain resistant. It does wear well but can tend to mat down over time. Wool is another option, but very rarely used anymore. Lastly are the Eco yarns. The most popular is PET. PET stands for (polyethylene terephthalate). PET fiber is made out of recycled plastic bottles. It is also extremely stain resistant. DuPont has also introduced Sorona, which can be made into carpet yarn. Sorona is mainly produced from corn syrup.

The buzz about frieze carpet

So what's all the craze in floorcovering about frieze carpet?

Frieze is a "new" twist (great pun!) on what was previously know as trackless carpet. It is has a look that hides trackmarks, shoeprints and vacuum marks. It is sort of a blend between a trackless and the old shag style of the 1970's.

Frieze carpet's look is created by infusing an somewhat irregular twist in the yarn structure. As compared to shag carpet, the yarn in Frieze is tighter and appears thinner. Frieze flooring also usually has a shorter pile height (overall height of the yarn) than the older shag versions.

You can get cheap frieze carpet in various styles. Solid colors are available as well as "flecked" options. The flecked options tend to hide dirt and tracking better than the solids in my opinion, but it's up to you what you like the look of better in your floorcovering.

Different Frieze styles come offered in all of the major yarn types. Nylon (best overall), Olefin (polypropylene), and Polyester. (I'll cover these different yarns in an upcoming blog with more flooring information).

Why is Dalton, GA the place to look for discount carpet? In the early 1900's a nich market took place along Hwy 41 with local citizens selling handcrafted Chenille bedspreads along the roadside and small storefronts. With the advent of better technology in the mid 1900's the production of bedspreads became more industrialized and product could be produced on equipment much faster than older methods. Small companies were built to produce the bedspreads in higher quantities. These same companies started experimenting with other ways to use this method of textiles to manufacture new products, hence the birth of carpet. With the majority of both carpet manufacturer's and carpet and textile equipment oem's located in Dalton, Ga, the little town in North Ga became the discount carpet capitol of the world.

With so much discount carpet flooring produced locally, retail/wholesale flooring stores and outlets began to boom. These stores, since located close to the manufacturing, could get material quicker and cheaper than stores located farther away. With the exponential growth in business due to their locale, the stores could stock more as well as they were selling more than out of town stores. With more annual sales, their buying power increased and therefore they get access to special deals on overruns, seconds, off color goods, promotional flooring, special private labeled floorcovering etc. It's a productive cycle for both the retailer and the manufacturer.

An interesting thing happened in the 1970's. All three still have a majority of their manufacturing based in Dalton or close by.

Why consider Luxury Vinyl Planks and Tiles

A recent trend in flooring is the advent of Luxury Vinyl Tile and Luxury Vinyl Plank. These products are not your Momma's kitchen floor! This style is also not to be confused with the Vinyl Peel and Stick products you find for .$99 at the big box stores. Luxury Vinyl is typically manufactured from virgin PVC, has a tough wearlayer, and also has a more robust backing system than standard vinyl sheet goods.

Why consider Luxury Vinyl Planks or Tiles?

First of all, durability. The products will not chip or dent as easily as a real wood product or even some laminates. The surface should hold up as well or better than anything else for most pet's nails too. They also hold up better than hardwoods and laminates in potentially wet areas such as kitchens, bathrooms, mud rooms, etc (no laminates in the kitchen please, from my own personal experience!). If you aren't using Ceramic tile in the wet areas, Luxury Vinyl is the way to go. To give you an example of durability, the next time you are in W**mart, go to the clothing section and look at what you are standing on. If it looks like a wood plank, but doesn't sound quite like you are walking on wood, that's Karndean's Luxury Vinyl Planks. If it is good enough for that kind of traffic, it should hold up in a home just fine.

Second is the look and feel. These are textured to look like the real thing, Wood, Ceramic, or Stone. In our Kardean Vinyl center at Beckler's carpet, people are blown away by the look. Unless you have seen it yourself, it's hard to believe. You can do anything from formal to rustic. Even add designs and floor borders. When you walk on Luxury Vinyl, it doesn't have as much of that "cold" feeling as Ceramic or Hardwood. Some consumers even say it is "softer" and more quiet to walk on.

There is a drawback. I would not recommend this as a do-it-yourself project. A heavy roller is required for installation and to make sure you fully get the warranty, you need to follow installation instructions to the letter.
